CTO Chris Carreiro in AI Journal

Chris Carreiro, CTO at Park Place Technologies, features in an article titled; ‘Why AI is only as good as the network behind it.’

In the article, Chris argues that AI readiness is usually measured by the wrong yardstick: organisations count GPUs and compute while the surrounding infrastructure lags behind. Because training and inference run across a chain of storage, network, servers and applications, the weakest link sets the pace for everything else, and GPU clusters generate heavy server-to-server traffic that is far more latency-sensitive than the user-driven patterns most enterprise networks were designed for, so congestion on a single node can slow an entire cluster.

The failure mode is gradual degradation over months rather than a visible outage, and conventional device-by-device monitoring won’t catch it: every component can report as healthy while the workload underperforms, and polling intervals are far too slow to see congestion that happens in fractions of a second.

The recommendation is network observability; track data paths rather than devices, watch for early signs of degradation rather than outright failure, and use that visibility for evidence-based capacity planning, since a slowdown blamed on GPU capacity may really be a bottleneck in the network.
